Generate every article's featured image with AI

Every article needs an image, and stock libraries give you the same generic photos as everyone else. 4Linking generates an original featured image for each post from its title and content, optimizes it for the web and assigns it on its own. Without leaving WordPress, without browsing image libraries.

Concept

A custom featured image for every article

4Linking's image module creates an article's featured image directly from WordPress. It takes the post's title and context, builds a visual prompt and sends it to the image model. The result is an original image —not stock— designed for that specific article.

From there, the plugin does the rest: it converts the image to WebP, generates the sizes WordPress needs, fills in the alt text and caption, and sets it as the post's featured image. You only choose the style; the whole flow happens without you leaving the editor.

The problem

Stock libraries give you the same photos as everyone else

Illustrating a blog at scale with stock libraries has a hidden cost that's rarely mentioned. It's not just the search time: it's that the result ends up looking like everyone else's site.

  • Generic, repeated photos: the same stock image appears on your site and on your competitor's, because you all search for the same thing with the same keywords.
  • Loose connection to the content: you find a photo that "will do" instead of one that illustrates exactly what the article is about.
  • Time per post: searching, downloading, cropping, resizing and uploading each image is manual work that multiplies when you publish daily.
  • Neglected weight and SEO: stock images often get uploaded without optimization, without alt text and in heavy formats that slow down the page.

Generating the image with AI solves all four at once: it's original, it starts from the article's own content, it's produced in seconds and it comes out already optimized for the web.

The flow

How it works

You enable the featured image on the article and choose what you want it to look like: visual style, aspect ratio, model and quality. The plugin starts from the post's title and content to build the prompt, so the image reflects what the article is actually about, not a vague topic.

You set style, aspect ratio, model and quality; the prompt is built from the article's content.

Before generating, you can press "See the exact prompt that will be sent to the model" to review what you're going to ask for. And if you want to tweak something just for that article —"no people," "cooler palette," "include coastal elements"— you type it in the style instructions and it gets layered on top of the template.

Visual style

Reusable styles and templates

To keep all your images on the same line, 4Linking uses image templates. A template defines the visual style —photographic, editorial illustration, doodle, infographic, collage— and is applied as a prompt modifier. You pick the template once and every image on the site or client comes out consistent.

Pick a visual style among the available templates; the model and the instructions are set in the same step.

Beyond the style, you control the rest of the image from the article itself:

  • Aspect ratio: 16:9 wide for hero, square, vertical… whatever fits your theme template.
  • Quality: from standard to high, depending on the balance you want between detail and cost.
  • Per-article style instructions: specific tweaks that stack on top of the template, only for that post.

Visual consistency without effort

Define the template once per client or niche and every image keeps the same style, even if you generate them on different days or from automation.

Models

Two models and an automatic fallback

You pick the image model depending on what you need at each moment:

  • gpt-image-1-mini — the cheap option, recommended by default. Solid results at a lower cost, ideal for volume production.
  • gpt-image-1 — maximum quality. Produces the best photorealistic results when the image is worth it.

If the chosen model fails for any reason, the plugin automatically retries with a fallback model, so the flow doesn't get stuck halfway. You work with your own OpenAI key (BYOK model), so you pay each image's public price directly to OpenAI, with no intermediation or 4Linking markup.

Performance and SEO

Automatic optimization and SEO

An unoptimized image hurts page speed and SEO. That's why every generated image goes through automatic preparation before being attached to the post:

  • WebP format: good quality at a much lower weight than JPG or PNG, so the page loads fast.
  • Standard sizes: the 1536×1024, 1024×683, 768×512 and 300×200 variants that WordPress serves by device are generated.
  • Filled-in metadata: descriptive alt text, title and caption, generated automatically and optimized for SEO.
  • Automatic assignment: the image is uploaded to the media library and marked as the post's featured image.

Alt text isn't a minor detail: it's what search engines and screen readers read. Generating it automatically and well-described improves each image's accessibility and ranking with no extra work from you.

Not only when creating

Images for posts you already have

Image generation isn't limited to new articles. You can run it on its own over already-published posts that don't have a featured image, or that drag along a stock photo you'd like to replace with an original.

It's useful for refreshing an old blog: instead of searching for images one by one for dozens of old entries, the plugin generates the missing featured image based on the content they already have. And since it's part of the automation pipeline, it can also create the image as one more step when generating and publishing articles on their own.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about image generation

Are the images original or from a stock library?

They're original, generated with AI from your article's title and content. They don't come from any stock library, so you won't see them repeated on other sites.

How much does it cost to generate an image?

You pay OpenAI's public per-image price directly to your account, with no 4Linking markup (BYOK model). With gpt-image-1-mini the cost per image is very low; gpt-image-1 costs more in exchange for higher quality. As a flat per-image rate, it's worth checking OpenAI's current pricing.

Can I keep a consistent style across the whole blog?

Yes. You define an image template with the style you want and it's applied to every generation. You can have one template per client or niche so each project has its own visual identity.

Can I add images to old posts that don't have a featured one?

Yes. Generation can be run on its own over existing posts that don't have a featured image, without needing to regenerate the content.

Do the images come out optimized for the web?

Yes. Every image is converted to WebP, resized to WordPress's standard sizes and has alt text, title and caption filled in automatically before being assigned as the featured image.
